What's Actually Happening Overnight

During sleep, your foot naturally rests in a plantar-flexed position, toes pointing slightly downward, ankle relaxed. In this position, the plantar fascia, which runs along the underside of your foot from your heel to your toes, sits in a shortened, slack state for several hours.

The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue that functions as a key load-bearing structure. When you're not loading it, particularly when it's already irritated or degenerated, this tissue stiffens. Taking your first steps slowly and deliberately, rather than sprinting to the kitchen, also makes a meaningful difference.
